USE OF A HOPPER TO SIMULATE EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION IN A CENTRIFUGAL MODEL
One of the recognised difficulties in the application of the centrifugal modelling technique has been that of realistically simulating the construction of embankments, cuttings and various other forms of soil structure. Such difficulties are discussed in this paper, and the development of a device is described that enables one type of bank to be constructed in a centrifugal model while it is running. These banks are made of dry sand, and they are poured from a hopper mounted on the model container and controlled by means of a pneumatically operated jack via pneumatic slip rings on the centrifuge shaft. Experiments with the device are described and the limitations of the method are discussed, bearing in mind that the majority of embankments are not felt to be amenable to model simulation of their construction processes. /TRRL/
