TYRES FOR THE MINING INDUSTRY
This article examines the applications of technology to heavy earthmover tyres such as are used on haulage trucks, wheeled loaders and bulldozers. After briefly outlining the development, specification and construction of these tyres, the article gives a comparison of the merits of cross- and radial-ply tyres, with particular reference to the advantages of cross-ply steel belted tyres which combine good stability, tread wear and traction. The U.S. classification of cross-ply tyres is discussed and also the tracked tyres with steel shoes that have been developed by the Caterpillar Tractor Company. Notes are given on the selection of tyres for a particular vehicle operation or site which include appropriate tables and formulae. The results of a survey of tyre life are given and factors affecting tyre wear are discussed. Tyre maintenance needs are given, including a list of statistics that should be collected; correct inflation pressure is given as the most important item in maintenance. Tyre inflation is discussed in detail, reference being made to the use of special materials including nitrogen, water, dry ballast, foamed polymers and liquid sealants. The use of tyre chains is advocated under severe conditions of use. The article concludes by discussing likely future trends such as possible increases in the capacity of trucks and the problems associated with the wide range of conditions under which the tyres are used. /TRRL/
