FALSEWORK FOREST CONQUERS KESWICK SLATE
The 220 M long post-tensioned Greta Bridge forms part of the Keswick By-Pass, and as such crosses a steep-sided gorge formed of highly fractured slate. An imperial college borehole periscope was used in an extensive survey which allowed bedding planes to be seen in situ, and an analysis of this survey led to the design of what is described as the country's most complicated bridge falsework. The author describes the falsework design, which involved the use of hunnebeck h33 girders carried on h110 series towers, and 12000 M3 of kwickform staging. Some 21 strain gauges have been positioned in the staging as a check against any overstressing that might occur during stressing of the concrete box deck. /TRRL/
