BATTERIES AND CONTROLS FOR C.V. TRACTION
The author believes there is a market for limited range electric vehicles and gives a brief outline of the structure and function of the different types of battery in use. There is now an incentive to lighten batteries and chloride's battery development programme is therefore described. The aim of lead-acid battery development is to produce batteries capable of driving vehicles for 50-60 miles of stop/start driving and it is felt that the optimum is a life of around 1000 cycles with a 46% increase in energy density. Larger term development takes in many different couples, the one most likely to succeed being sodium sulphur which has liquid electrodes and a solid electrolyte and a predicted energy density of five times that of existing batteries. Advances in controller and motor technology are described, upon which increases in battery performance are dependent. /TRRL/
