COMPUTER GRAPHICS OFFER A SHORT, SHARP LOOK ALONG FUTURE ROADS
The author describes developments in the field of visualisation at the computer aided design (cad) centre, Cambridge. The gino-f graphics developed at Cambridge are the basis for most of the cad centre's visualisation programmes. Most basic is 'things' which defines a 3-D object within the computer. The next is 'hidden lines' providing perspective line drawings and then 'greyscales' shaded objects to represent surface texture. An account is given of 'photomontage' which superimposes a programmed structure onto a photograph of the existing site to give A simulation of the impact of the structure with great speed and accuracy. Possible developments are seen in this field including colour simulation, video-based photomontage, interactive modification of a design and the use of visualisation as a design tool. The centre is collaborating with TRRL on mathematical assessments of view, though this does not bear directly on visualisation work. /TRRL/
