BIKEWAY SCHEMES: AN UPHILL GRIND
The author presents a brief review of the progress of bikeway schemes throughout the country. Portsmouth's cycle route experiment in particular is examined where several drawbacks have been encountered and the future of the scheme is the subject of controversy. Traffic signals with bike-only phases are to be used in some areas, activated by bike-sensitive inductance loops to avoid delays. The mixing of cycles and mopeds with pedestrians is shown by the author to be safer than mixing with motor vehicles by reference to accident figures in stevenage.
