MOTORIST (TRAVELER) INFORMATION SYSTEMS
The European approach to traffic management, in general, strongly favors an emphasis on motorist information systems whether it is by means of roadside systems, consisting of "signaling" (signing) systems utilizing variable message signs (VMS) or in-vehicle information systems. This emphasis is largely in evidence with operational systems that have already been deployed and pilot or demonstration projects underway and supported through the European Community (EC) DRIVE and PROMETHEUS programs. The consistency of this philosophy was demonstrated in meetings with various research and operational organizations in the different countries visited during the IVHS Europe 1993 Study Tour. These countries included The Netherlands, Germany, and France.
