FACTORS INFLUENCING THE SPEED CHOICE OF DRIVERS IN TOWN
From the point of view of road safety, it is of crucial importance, whether the drivers agree or disagree with the traffic rules imposed upon them, ordering or prohibiting certain forms of behavior. Interviews with drivers as well as free comments added by them to a questionnaire (n=110) have been used to reveal the motives of speed choice of drivers after the reduction in 1993 of the speed limit from 60 to 50 km/h in built-up areas. In a former study in 1991, only 23 percent of the drivers expressed that they would agree with the reduction of the speed limit. A considerable resistance was still felt some months after the introduction. For the reluctance to obey rules, both rational and emotional reasons have been given. Drivers thought that it was impossible to comply with the new regulation, and that lower speed was not equal with a higher degree of road safety.
