GUIDELINES ON REGULATION AND CONTROL OF MIXED TRAFFIC IN URBAN AREAS
The article discusses the problem of urban traffic congestion and control in India caused by the heterogenous character of the local traffic which includes a mixture of modern and primitive forms of transport. It is suggested that segregation of different classes of traffic would minimise the hazards and conflict caused by such traffic conditions. It is shown how segregation of slow moving traffic such as bicycles, auto-rickshaws and animal-drawn vehicles can be achieved by the provision of a 5M wide lane on either side of a main carriageway. It is also suggested that in areas of greatest congestion certain classes of slow moving and commercial vehicles might be prohibited during peak hours. Recommendations are given for the control and segregation or pedestrians, bicycles, hand-carts and animal-drawn vehicles. /TRRL/
