TILTROTOR TRANSPORTATION--AN INTERMODAL LINK FOR THE FUTURE
As the next century approaches and congestion continues to worsen, we need to look at new ways to move people and cargo. Air transportation has been a major factor in our country's extraordinary economic growth over the past 50 years, and it will continue to be the primary mode of choice for long distance travel. Many trips are short distances, less than 500 miles, and people still want to travel by air. However, our air transportation system is not adequately geared up to move people efficiently over the shorter distances. Automobiles are clearly the first choice of the majority of travelers if the distances are reasonable or air access to their destination is difficult. Time and cost are also factors in deciding which travel mode to use. This is where tiltrotor aircraft can play an important role. This paper describes briefly why it should be considered as an intermodal link.
