THE STATUS OF THE MANUAL OF UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES--REWRITE AND NEW FORMAT
In the late 1980s the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), through the "Federal Register" process, posed the question to the general public on whether the existing "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices" (MUTCD) should be rewritten in a different format. The National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices surveyed its members on the need for a reformatted MUTCD. The consensus reached was that the "Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices" should be updated and that areas within the present manual need to be strengthened. This paper discusses briefly some of the necessary changes and expectations.
