STATUS OF TRIP PLANNING AND CAR SCHEDULING SYSTEMS IN THE RAILROAD INDUSTRY

The purpose of this paper is to describe trip planning in the railroad industry today. The discussion includes car scheduling, pre-trip planning, slack time, and noise in the system. Other concepts addressed include service scheduling and estimated time of arrival. Intermodal systems are discussed with regard to scheduling and trip planning, and a car scheduling algorithm is presented. Representative points of view from the Norfolk Southern Rail System, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and Union Pacific Railroad are detailed.
