SKID RESISTANCE. METHOD FOR ITS RESTORATION & MAINTENANCE REVIEWED AT PIARC CONGRESS
Information obtained from ten countries on the maintenance of safe standards of skidding resistance on heavily trafficked high speed roads, formed the subject of a report presented at the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses XVth World Road Congress, Mexico City, October 1975. Reasons given for the loss of road surface rugosity included increased traffic flows, excess binder, polished aggregates, penetration of chippings into rolled asphalt and the effect of wear by studded tyres. The techniques reported as being used to restore skid resistance are divided in this paper into two groups as firstly techniques which involve the removal of material, and secondly those techniques which involve the addition of materials. Techniques in the first group are defined under the headings of bush hammering, milling, grooving, hydrochloric acids, sanding, flame scouring and planing; and in the second group reheating, resinous layers, surface dressing, slurry sealing and open-textured wearing courses. The application of these techniques to both bituminous and concrete surfaces are considered in this paper. /TRRL/
