ENERGY DISTRIBUTION IN PAVEMENT LAYERS AND ITS RELEVANCE TO SERVICE LIFE
An analysis for prediction of service life of pavements from a knowledge of energy distribution in different layers thereof under stipulated energy inputs from vehicular loads, temperature conditions, where necessary, and rate of traffic growth has been developed. It is indicated that semi-rigid sub-base in the lower layer of pavement is distinctly advantageous from the point of energy distribution and longer life for the pavement, the costs of construction remaining unaltered. The increase in life expectancy could be as high as 50-60 per cent for both rigid and flexible pavements. The fatigue lives of pavements in terms of number of critical load repetition to failure obtained from the suggested method of analysis have been compared with those from test data and compare favourably with each other. /TRRL/
