ROAD TRANSPORT: THE ROLE OF RESEARCH
The article discusses the role played by research in A number of aspects of road transport technology, its operations and policy. Previous policies of concentrating on developing motorway networks resulting in the social penalties of air pollution, noise, intrusion and disruption as well as traffic accidents, has led to greater government involvement in transport planning matters. It is in this complex area that information is required which considers the social and environmental aspects of all forms of transport. Current research can be considered under three sections: construction and maintenance, traffic and safety, and, systems and operations. Highway engineering research into improving the design and construction of road structures and their maintenance has resulted in techniques for testing bridge structures and road surfaces. Research into traffic and safety problems is aimed at developing more economical, less pollutive, vehicles using road systems with optimum efficiency and safety. Recent work on area traffic control is beginning to provide an important element in urban traffic management using such systems as transyt, bus transyt and scoot developed at TRRL. Research into systems and operations is aimed at developing public and freight transport systems according to economic and social needs. In conclusion the role of research is described as providing A scientific analysis of the likely consequences of different road transport policies. /TRRL/
