ASPHALT UPDATE
A major thrust of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) was to improve the durability and cost-effectiveness of asphalt pavements. The Superpave system is a SHRP product that offers an improved methodology for specifying material components, mix design and analysis, and pavement performance prediction. This article reports that for SHRP products to be successfully implemented, agencies and industry must invest time and personnel to ensure their suitability. The effect on the asphalt industry is discussed as well as implementation efforts. A sidebar is included about the speed at which the Superpave system is being inplemented.
