A SIMPLE TEST OF FRACTURE TOUGHNESS
The authors describe a simple test to determine the fracture toughness of concrete. The stress intensity factor k reaches a critical value kc at the point of instability of crack extension and is taken to be a measure of fracture toughness. Kc and the effective work of fracture zc are recorded for circumferentially notched round bars under four point loading. The results are tabulated and suggest that kc is independent of notch depth for deep notches and of notch width for widths less than 0.056 cm. Kc is also independent of testing speed and is a material constant for concrete, with a low variability for fine-grained mixes. The test is economic of material, suitable for testing in situ concrete and variability of the data is low. /TRRL/
