ITS: COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY CASE STUDY, PLANO, TEXAS

Plano, Texas--home to the national headquarters of JCPenney, Frito Lay, and EDS--was faced with the challenge of extending its intelligent traffic control system into Legacy Park, the business development where the three headquarters reside. Plano's 80 traffic signals and four surveillance cameras are controlled from a central location using the local cable television network. The purpose of the study described here is to present several alternatives for connecting Legacy Park traffic signals and camera into the control center using state-of-the-art communication technologies, such as fiber optics, spread spectrum radio, and digital video. Several assumptions are presented for purposes of clarity. The authors also report on the net present value of the initial and recurring costs associated with each alternative, highlighting the most cost-effective choices.
