ONCE UPON A TOWN
Celebration, the Walt Disney Company's "new urbanist" community, is being built on 4,900 acres just outside Orlando, Florida. This article describes the pre-World War II town planning of Celebration, which employs a curvilinear street pattern and the use of alleys, pocket parks, and buildings grouped around greens. Residential builders are being provided with a "pattern book" to ensure the consistency necessary in the quality of design. Transportation plans are a major concern of the Celebration project. Sixty-six million in road improvements along the Interstate 4 corridor is planned.
