BITUMEN QUALITY IN THE BALTIC STATES
A.S. Nybit Limited was founded in August 1991 and is so far the only quality bitumen supplier in the Baltic States. As owned 68 percent by Nynas Petroleum, Nybit is supplying bitumen produced by Nynas in Sweden and shipped to a terminal in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Nybit is also producing bitumen emulsions for road construction purposes. Emulsions have mainly been used by surface-dressings, tack-coating and pot-hole repairs. Using bitumen from one source and of low quality has influenced the entire road construction system in the Baltic States. What is needed is a new generation of well-educated road engineers; technical support by 'soft' loans for upgrading road technology; and co-operation program with western companies, where contractors from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia can subcontract.
