POLYNOMIAL ROAD ALIGNMENT
This paper describes the applications of a particular curve fitting technique to a series of points and restraints which define the route of a proposed road. The mathematical background of the least squares curve fitting method is briefly discussed and the subsequent operations, on the general polynomial equation thus formed, are described with the aid of flow charts and short sections of FORTRAN program. Emphasis is placed on the production of A conventional output, for design and plotting purposes, compatible with that of current highway design suites. Site setting out information, notably a difficult problem with the non-traditional forms of route alignment, is output in A form suitable for setting out the whole, or any part of the route from all standard chainage intervals using the long chord or unit sub-chord and theodolite method, incorporating the distances and bearings of permanent survey ground markers.(a) /TRRL/
