NEW TYPE OF HOT MIX PLANT OPERATIONAL IN NEW ZEALAND
A brief description is given of a drum continuous mixing plant, three of which are now in operation in New Zealand. In a typical plant, cold feed material is continuously weighed from four individual hoppers. It is transferred by belt to a near horizontal mixer drier drum. In the drum, which is fired from the aggregate inlet end, the aggregate is both dried and coated with bitumen by introduction of the binder between one quarter and one third of the way through. Advantages claimed include: lesser plant size for given output; lower capital cost; substantially lower fuel consumption; better uniformity, lesser in-process binder hardening. The plant is expected to produce a satisfactory end product. The plants in New Zealand were locally manufactured under a license patent held in the USA.
