FLIGHTCREW PERFORMANCE IN ACCIDENTS, INCIDENTS, AND NORMAL FLIGHTS
Much of accident prevention value resides in the collective record of past accidents, but the accident record can yield much more when combined with the perspectives that are provided by incidents and normal operations. Most major air carrier accidents of recent years have received investigations that generated large amounts of human factors data. The purpose of this paper is to present some of the findings and implications of research that used these accident data to assess flightcrew performance and the characteristics of the flights and crewmembers involved. These findings, in turn, suggest approaches to integrating data from accidents, incidents, and normal flights for maximum effectiveness in preventing future accidents.
