CANADIAN TRAFFIC THROUGH WEST COAST CONTAINER PORTS

This paper draws on research work recently completed by the Transport Institute for Western Economic Diversification Canada. The paper commences with a description of the main container ports on the Pacific Coast -- Vancouver, Seattle/Tacoma, Oakland and Long Beach/Los Angeles. Of the west coast container traffic originating in or destined for Canada in 1993, almost 30 percent was routed through U.S. ports, while there was a negligible movement of U.S. traffic through Vancouver. This paper documents container train services, service times and freight rates for container traffic between the various Pacific ports and Toronto.
