AIR-BAGS FOR MOTORCYCLES
Brief details are given of impact tests on air bags with dummy drivers. Results of the tests, carried out by bothwell,p, show that the best solution is to incorporate the airbag into the rider's jacket and put the heavy associated equipment on the machine. The airbag and associated equipment are connected by means of a flexible plug-in detachable cord, which, in a crash, releases itself automatically 40 milliseconds after triggering, freeing the rider. The new machine has a stiff but light medial transverse bulkhead, wider than the rider's knees, knee padding in the back of the bulkhead, and a minimum of protrusion. The fuel tank is installed beneath the seat while the front fork is designed so that in a head-on impact its deformation raises the steering head, countering the pitching that helps to unseat the rider. /TRRL/
