BMT LANE BEATS CITY RUSH HOUR

This short article outlines how Cape Town, South Africa, has decided to try to alleviate some of the worst effects of its peak period traffic. On 11 December 1995, the city authorities introduced a fast lane for buses and minibus taxis in the right hand lane on the inbound section of part of the N2 motorway. The regulations for this Bus and Minibus-Taxi lane (BMT lane) allow only buses and taxis to drive in this lane from 6.30am to 9.30am on working days. The BMT lane is intended to give public transport an advantage over private transport, by speeding up their turn-round time, and enabling them to provide a faster, safer, and efficient service to the city's commuters. A similar lane will be introduced to the outward-bound motorway if this trial is successful.
