THE VISIBLE BICYCLE
EEN ZICHTBARE FIETS
Visual perceptibility must be considered as an important factor for bicycle and moped safety, particularly in the dark. The authors discuss the factors determining visual efficiency and the dimensions and concepts conventionally used in analyzing the visual process. They emphasize the relative importance of recognizability in comparison with sheer visibility or conspicuousness. A lack of attention to pattern recognition is noticed in conventional visual research as applied to traffic problems. The resulting overemphasis on guantitative factors such as luminance will lead increasingly to visual distraction. The authors urge the necessity of more research and discussion based on information processing and pattern-recognition approach. Several given or possible configurations were investigated under night and twilight conditions. The testing and developing procedures were unconventional in that they explicitly relied to some extent on the contribution of intuitive craftsmanship: the skill of persons professionally engaged in determining the immediate recognizability of pictorial patterns. The legally required lighting system (white head-light, red tail-light) is briefly discussed and suggestions are offered for improving its reliability. /TRRL/
