NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR PROFESSIONAL CAR-SHARING
Car sharing may be a serious alternative to private cars in congested urban areas. Modern technologies make it possible to manage large car pools so that professional organisations including public transport operators can offer a car-sharing service. This paper shows the requirement for professional car-sharing systems and discusses technical solutions for such systems based on modern technologies. COCOS (Car-sharing Organisation and COmmunication System) is described, a system developed at the University of Siegen using smart cards and wireless data communication. The paper describes the practical application of COCOS and shows the possible connection to established public transport systems. For the covering abstract see IRRD 882109.
