GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) AND THE PROBLEM OF THE SHORTEST PATHS IN ROAD NETWORK - APPLICATION TO BFC
GIS technology represents a most appropriate way for storing, analysing and presenting road network data on PC computers. One set of problems which can be solved by GIS technology includes Operations Research (OR) transport related problems. In this way the difficulties we encounter in solving OR problems, such as a large amount of data describing a network, are eliminated in a very simple way. It opens up great possibilities for OR to make a great contribution in real life. This paper describes the integration of GIS technology with OR methods (assignment, shortest paths, vehicle routing, transport problems, travelling salesmen, maximal flow through the network, resource allocation, node and link problems). As an example of integration the results of a project developed for BFC (Beocin Cement Factory) in Beocin, SR Yugoslavia, are presented. A computer program for solving shortest paths problems has been developed and connected with a GIS program and road network data base. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 882109.
