AN INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATION OF ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

This paper reviews the road traffic accident data in eleven European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany (West), France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, and the United States during the period from 1975 to 1989. The aim of the paper is: (1) to identify changes in fatalities and fatality rates for different road users and age groups; (2) to determine whether there were statistically significant changes in the fatal traffic accident characteristics studied; (3) to answer the question: How and Where do people die and are they drunk?; and (4) to develop accident prediction models for road fatalities. This paper presents a comprehensive and rational analysis of the recorded accident data. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 882436.
