A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SAFETY EFFECTING ROAD DESIGN STANDARDS IN EASTERN AND WESTERN EUROPE - A CASE OF POLAND
International harmonization of road geometric standards and norms has a number of advantages with respect to continued growth in tourism and trade associated with the European Union and with opening up of East-West relations. Countries in the Baltic Sea region have faced a marked or even dramatic deterioration in road safety standard in recent years, but evolution in all transportation policies can be noticed. Lessons are learned both from their own experiences and the experience of the OECD/ECMT countries. In Polish standards, several facts and assumptions are agreed with international policies, but there are many cases which should be verified from the point of view of safety. The basic road infrastructure in Poland is represented by two-lane roads with heavy vehicle traffic. Efficient safety measures for roads passing through small towns and cross-section dimensions for new ordinary roads and motorways are expected. Recommendations for changes in these standards will be included in the national road safety programme. (A). For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 882436.
