INNOVATIVE TOWING SYSTEM HAS ADVANTAGES

A new traction winch towing system may revolutionize ocean tows within certain ranges. The basic system consists of a double braided, two-in-one nylon rope line and a traction winch initially developed for mooring tankers in the North Sea. Two small vertically mounted, active winches equipped with special "V" grooves designed to accommodate braided rope construction make up the hydraulic traction winch. Positive tension-up to 200 tons-with instant control and no slippage, as well as fast load and scope adjustments, are possible with this unit. Local and remote controls, plus integral tension readout in one console permit one-man operation during the tow. Electrical or diesel driven power units are mounted either below deck or next to the winch. Winch models for handling line up to 21-in. in circumference (7in. in diameter) and pulling up to 400,000 lbs. are available. The synthetic hawser needs no catenary and actually runs completely clear of the water, thus resulting in less drag and better tow control. The absence of such a catenary also keeps the line clear from obstructions, a frequent hazard in harbors and shallow waters. Traction winch specifications are included for four separate models.
