FULL-SCALE STATIC AND DYNAMIC MEASUREMENTS ON M.V. "NIHON"
The contents of this paper are concerned with a comparison of theoretical and full-scale responses for the 35,000 tonne dwt container ship NIHON when subject to static and hydrodynamic loadings, with special attention to the behaviour under torsional loads. The project, upon which this paper was based, was a co-operative effort between the Swedish Ship Research Foundation and Lloyd's Register of Shipping. A static torsion test was carried out on the ship in order to evaluate the theoretical structural modelling used for the prediction of behaviour in waves. Data at sea were obtained on a number of occasions when special seakeeping manoeuvres were carried out in association with the launching of directional wave buoys. Comparisons between the calculated behaviour based on the processed sea state data and the measured responses indicate good agreement for motions, stresses and pressures. Vertical bending stresses, in stern and quartering seas, were significantly over-estimated affecting the combined stresses. In head and bow seas these results showed good correlation with theory.
