GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATION OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES IN TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL EQUIPMENT
The research project described here was conducted for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to assess current and emerging technologies in traffic signal control equipment and to provide guidelines for their application. The research concentrated on summarizing the currently available advanced traffic signal control equipment, as well as emerging technologies in the area of traffic signal control. A survey of current states' practices was conducted to assess the usage of advanced technologies in traffic signal control. Guidelines for implementation of traffic signal control equipment were developed to assist transportation professionals in exploiting advanced technologies and effectively addressing congestion problems at signalized intersections. Finally, emerging technologies are identified based on several equipment vendors' inputs, and examination of related literature.
