MANAGING SAFETY IN AND AROUND AIRPORTS. CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

The international air transport industry is undergoing major changes on all fronts: privatization and deregulation, globalization, increasing competition, cross-national mergers, and the entrance of new carriers to international markets. These trends, coupled with the continuing growth in freight and passenger traffic, are translating into increased cost pressures for companies in the industry, and to added string on already limited air and ground capacity. These factors call for additional attention by those in the industry to the safety of air transport, and in particular to safety in and around airports. Some areas addressed are: Safety Issues; Safety and Air Transport--Policy and Practice; External Safety of Airports: The State of the Art; Safety and Aircraft Design; Flight Operations; Air Traffic Control; Safety Enhancement and Airport Operations at Schiphol; Institutional Policy Issues; Increasing Capacity at the Airport while Maintaining Aviation Safety; The Correlation Between Accidents, Safety, Airport Acceptance, and Land Planning Measures.
