COMPARATIVE EFFECTS OF U-TUBE AND FREE SURFACE TYPE PASSIVE ROLL STABILISATION SYSTEMS
The results of a systematic series of tests of free surface and U-tube roll stabilisation tank configurations are presented. For each tank configuration, the modifications to internal tank geometry and structure and their effects on the static moment amplification and frequency are shown. The changes in response that occur with variation in vertical location are also investigated. A simplified mathematical expression for estimation of ship response to regular beam seas, stabilised and unstabilised, is explained and used to obtain comparative results with both tank stabiliser configurations.
