CELLULAR DATA STANDARDS SUPPORT FOR ITS COMMUNICATIONS
Cellular data communication standards are being developed by the cellular industry. For the cellular AMPS system, the standard Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) has been developed. It allows data to operate in a data packet mode over idle voice channels using the TCP/IP data communications protocol. Data standards are also being developed for the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) digital cellular systems. The different data service options for CDMA are messaging (paging), modem emulation, fax and connectionless data packet under TCP/IP. Data communication standards are also being developed for the European digital cellular system, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). Data fax, messaging (paging) and data transfer are part of the initial data communication standards being developed for GSM. This paper reviews the current data standards for CDPD, CDMA and GSM.
