SOPHISTICATED CHOICES
Ambitious tunnelling schemes around the world can now become a reality, thanks to the vast array of new equipment and methods which are continually brought to the market. The New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) was developed by Austrian engineers during the 1960s, at first as a system for tunnelling in soft ground. However, it soon found favor throughout Europe as a technique for excavating in hard rock, and is now used extensively in both Alpine and urban environments. Despite the popularity of NATM and other sprayed concrete lining (SCL) techniques around the world, the method received a damaging blow in October 1994, when a section of NATM rail tunnel under construction at London's Heathrow airport collapsed. Other NATM accidents prompted studies on its use.
