BRIDGE MANAGEMENT AT RENFE
Within the Transport Infrastructures, railway lines constitute an important national resource in Spain. The lines which make up the National Network of Spanish Railways (Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Espanoles - RENFE) cover a total length of 11,826 km, which generally follow a radial pattern. This, with the geography of the Peninsula, means that the 20 percent of the railway layout passes through mountainous areas, 30 percent through areas of low mountains and hills, and 50 percent through practically flat areas. These facts, together with the demands of the railway in relation to grades and curve radius, gave rise to the construction of pontoons, bridges and viaducts, in order to negotiate a large number of obstacles. Diverse materials have been used in the construction of the bridges, from brickwork to mixed structure, via masonry, reinforced concrete, iron, steel, etc.
