THE PIPE CONVEYOR
This article describes the pipe (tubular-belt) conveyor, which was developed by Japan Pipe Conveyor Co. Ltd. during the 1970s. The pipe conveyor had its first working installation in 1979, and is now a proven and reliable system, with about 500 installations in various parts of the world. The main advantages of the circular transport of bulk material that are embodied in the pipe conveyor are: (1) its provision for curves of relatively sharp radii in the horizontal and vertical planes; (2) its increased contact area between the belt and the conveyor, allowing much steeper angles; (3) the natural cleanliness of the system; (4) its much smaller cross-sectional area required to carry a given load; (5) assured product security between its loading and discharge points; (6) the ability to use its return belt to convey material; and (7) the ability to achieve economical plant layouts and eliminate the need for transfer points. Pipe conveyors also have many features in common with conventional troughed-belt conveyors. The design and commissioning requirements of the pipe conveyor are described in considerable detail. The conveyor's application to carry coal to a power station is described briefly. During the last 12 years, the pipe conveyor has been a simple, reliable system in a wide application range.
