TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS IN EARTHMOVER TYRES

This article examines some recent technology developments in new tyre manufacturing and retreading for earthmover tyres, and some of the latest new products on the market. The most important development since the early 1980s has been the substantial growth of radialisation. The rate of radialisation, and most technological developments in off-road tyres, have been influenced most by manufacturers' budgets, so that niche markets have tended to be the last to benefit from radial technology. The competitive market and good product knowledge among operators have ensured that earthmover tyres are being made to meet increasingly specific applications. In the truck tyre market, manufacturers are becoming increasingly involved in retreading operations. In contrast, the retread market is mostly left to specialist individual operators, with even Michelin restricting itself to an earthmover tyre repair service. Some examples are given of different technologies for earthmover tyre retreading in Europe.
