TOLLING GOES ON TRIAL
The background to the current UK motorway tolling trials is outlined. The need for trials of the existing technology was identified in 1993 and results should be available by 1998. Similar trials are being carried out in the rest of Europe with the aim of achieving interoperability. The UK trials will be concentrating in particular on enforcement, the diversion of traffic onto other routes and the issue of privacy.
