NEW ROADS FOR OLD
The recycling technique being used on 3km of the B4000 near Newbury in Berkshire is described. The 320,000 pound project involves planing off the failed wearing course, stabilising and in situ recycling about 21600 square m of pavement to a depth of 130mm and covering the reconstructed road with a new wearing course. The work is being carried out by Colas. Small quantities of cement and foamed bitumen are mixed into the pulverised road pavement using a BOMAG MPH 120R recycling machine. The technique avoids the need for fleets of vehicles removing old materials and importing new although costs are similar. The amount of bitumen used is determined from an analysis of the material and its addition controlled by the on-board pre-programmed computer.
