START OF THE WORK ON THE ORESUND FIXED LINK

This article outlines the scope of the project to build the Oresund fixed link between Denmark and Sweden, with special reference to its tunnelling operations. The fixed rail and motorway link will extend for nearly 16km from Kastrup in Denmark to Lernacken in Sweden. Its elements will be: (1) a 430m long artificial peninsula from Kastrup; (2) a 4.1km long artificial island complex; (3) the 3.8km long Drogden immersed tube tunnel between the peninsula and island; (4) an elevated bridge about 1km long; and (5) 2.7km and 3.7km long approach bridges to the elevated bridge. The design and construction period for the whole project is mid-1995 to mid-2000. The design and build contracts for the tunnel work were awarded on 20 July 1995 to Oresund Tunnel Contractors of Copenhagen. A set of functionality requirements for the tunnel was developed within the framework of Eurocodes EC1 to EC4 and EC7, supplemented by project application documents. Extensive risk analysis investigations were conducted to optimise the governing design parameters. A geotechnical database was established and placed at the contractor's disposal, for its subsequent updating and maintenance. Construction requirements are laid down in: (1) general requirements; (2) materials requirements; and (3) workmanship. Two types of concrete are specified.
