REGISTER OF TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS
The traffic safety record of Campinas, the second largest city in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, is described. The main cause of the high road accident rate is speed and this has led to a project using electronic speed controllers. The equipment comprises sensors installed under the pavement connected to a video camera and microcomputer. Images of vehicles exceeding the speed limit are transmitted to a Police blockade 1000m ahead. Phases in the implementation of the project are outlined. The number of violations recorded and the effect on motorists are discussed. For the covering abstract see IRRD 880251.
