THE EFFECT OF DYNAMIC SETTING OF VMS IN ROUTING TRAFFIC AROUND CHESTER
This paper considers the effectiveness of the use of variable message signs on routes to North Wales subject to congestion at holiday times. Variable message signs are installed on the M56 500m and 1000m from its junction with the M53 and monitoring units at eight points on the two routes to North Wales. The system's hardware is described including central equipment, signs, traffic monitoring units, communications and closed circuit television. The algorithms include saturation, delay and spare capacity algorithms and truth tables. The system has demonstrated that it is able to detect problems and select the appropriate legend. It has not been possible to confirm that diversions were due to the signs. For the covering abstract see IRRD 880251.
