DYNAMIC ROUTE INFORMATION IN THE NETHERLANDS, EFFECTS AND RESEARCH
Four variable message signs or Dynamic Route Information Panels (DRIPs) are in use on motorways A1, A2, A4 and A8 leading to the ringway A10 around Amsterdam. This paper describes a study of the network performance, user behaviour, safety, technical performance and cost effectiveness of the system. The results obtained with the DRIP system were considered to be largely positive but doubts were raised about the feasibility of evaluating the effects of dynamic traffic management measures on a network level. Further research into a possible extension of the system is described, in particular the design of variable message signs. For the covering abstract see IRRD 880251.
