METROLOGY OF URBAN MOVING BY G.P.S.
To aid vehicle navigation in urban areas French manufacturers were asked to provide vehicle location systems based on the Global Positioning System (GPS) with an accuracy of better than 5m for 95% of measurements. This paper describes the tests carried out on some of the systems developed based on GPS or DGPS (Differential GPS). The tests included a) static tests in perturbed urban areas, b) dynamic tests on an open site and c) dynamic tests on and actual dense urban site. None of the simple GPS systems were able to satisfy the requirements even on open sites. The use of DGPS satisfied requirements on open sites with no masking. The addition of a dead reckoning system improves performance but an integrated compact system is required. For the covering abstract see IRRD 880251.
