ACCURATE PASSENGER COUNTING: AN IMPORTANT TOOL FOR PLANNING

The potential importance of automatic counting of bus passengers boarding and alighting is well documented in the literature; a summary of possible uses is given in the article. However, the potential use of this data has been hampered by lack of reliable counting methods. In this article a new counting equipment, an intelligent counting mat, is described. The equipment has been thoroughly tested, and is now fully operational. With this equipment, the idea of on-going, reliable, automatic passenger counting programs, which provide real time information on demand patterns, can now be actually implemented.
