OPTICAL FIBER SENSORS: FROM MILITARY INSTRUMENTATION TO NOVEL TRANSPORTATION APPLICATIONS

With the increasing national emphasis on the improvement of existing transportation systems and associated civil infrastructure, fiber optics may play new and different roles in related sensing applications. Fiber optic sensors have been used for the quantitative nondestructive monitoring of advanced materials and structures for more than ten years. Typically such applications have included the in-situ monitoring of the material during fabrication, the in-service life-time measurement of strain, temperature, vibration and other parameters, and the eventual detection of damage or property degradation. Recent changes in world politics have refocused part of the effort of such sensor-integrated "smart materials and structures" from primarily military uses to civilian applications. The paper describes how optical fiber sensors originally developed for military applications are increasingly finding applications for advanced transportation systems. Such applications include vehicle detection, weigh-in-motion, and health monitoring of associated civil structures such as highways and bridges.
